Man with Edema (Dropsy) – Performance of Jesus
This incident of dining with a chief Pharisee in his house was somewhat different from the occasion of Luke 11:37-54. Jesus only performs in the circumstance in which His actions will bring Glory to God. Every instance recorded in the Holy Bible is purposed to magnify the presence of God for our lives. Dan Buttafuoco, president of the Historical Bible Society gives us five primary reasons we need to read and study the Bible: The Bible has transformed the world; people are willing to die for the Bible; it's the most accurate book of antiquity; it contains a life-changing message of freedom; it connects you to history's most important figure. We suggest and add, it records the acts and deeds of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
The man with dropsy (Luke 14:2) or as it is called today, Edema, abnormal swelling of tissues from a buildup of fluid. It is usually found in fish since a sign for Christians is the fish, we may surmise that this condition may exist in Christians today and may be recognized by swelling in our disposition to follow the Life of Christ. The important thing is that Jesus can cure us of all types of disease, if we believe! For example, this man with Edema was found in a preachers' house. We could, of course, ignore the relative nature of the disease and the place where it was found, but this is a warning to the people of God revealed by the performance of Jesus.
In this passage (Luke 1:1-4), the law of Moses, concerning the sabbath day, rose it's dreary head yet again; however, Christ reminded the Church leaders that what He did set the precedent for this special day. It is a day reserved by the Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28; Luke 6:1-5), rest from labor, but the Work of Jesus supersedes the work done by mankind (Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 20:8-11) because He was working for all humanity with the permission of God. He worked as the emissary of God, Son of God, child of man for the benefit of all men.
Luke 1:1-4
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took [him], and healed him, and let him go;
The LORD (our) Peace, Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24), we thank You for Your humility and kindness toward us. We praise You because You see us in our weakness and by Faith, You heal us of our swelling. We decree and declare blessings upon those who understand the rest of the Sabbath, so that; the sons of men can flow in the Glory of God for His Name's sake. Now, for the Kingdom and the Glory of God, we petition, with anointing in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and Savior, Amen.
